ENCINO, CA

Wildfire defense for Encino homes

You can coat the house, then leave. Matador Fire installs 50 gallons of long-term fire retardant at your house, with a pump and 100 feet of hose. You pull the hose around eaves, decks, and plants next to the house. The retardant keeps working after it dries.

EMBERS

Most homes are lost to embers, not the wall of flame.

Encino has a valley floor and a hillside. The hillside north of Ventura (toward Mulholland) is not the same as the flat valley floor. Check your parcel on the state's fire hazard zone map.1https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/what-we-do/community-wildfire-preparedness-and-mitigation/fire-hazard-severity-zones

NIST says embers cause most structure losses in wildland urban fires.2https://www.nist.gov/el/fire/resources/hazard-mitigation-methodology-hmm/how-fire-spreads-wui California's fire marshal says burning embers can ignite a building up to a mile from the main fire.1https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/what-we-do/community-wildfire-preparedness-and-mitigation/fire-hazard-severity-zones A fire on the ridge can throw embers below the ridge even if flame does not reach the street.

ON THE RECORD

When a mountain fire orders Encino to leave.

On January 10, 2025, during the Palisades Fire, LAFD issued a mandatory evacuation order from Sunset Blvd north to Encino Reservoir, and from the 405 west to Mandeville Canyon. That is the Encino fact.3https://lafd.org/alert/new-mandatory-evacuation-brush-fire-palisades-fire-01102025-inc0738

THE SYSTEM

50 gallons of retardant sit at your home.

50 gallons of non-toxic, long-term fire retardant, a pump, and 100 feet of hose, installed at your home. Installed, inspected, and refilled on a regular cycle as part of the subscription. You can pull the hose around the house.

Long-term retardant keeps working after it dries. Water only helps while it is wet. Heat dries water fast. You are supposed to have already left.

Apply before you leave, or let a defending crew use it after you are gone. Spray, then leave. A neighbor who knows the plan can spray for you.

This is one layer. It does not replace defensible space or home hardening. It does not replace the fire department.

Your choice of gas or electric pump. Same coverage. Same price.

Hillside Encino, north of Ventura toward Mulholland, is the usual fit. The valley floor is not the same zone.

THE FIRST FIVE FEET

Around the house is a different layer.

The first five feet around a house matter. IBHS calls that Zone 0, and says clearing combustibles there is one of the most important steps for cutting wildfire risk.4https://ibhs.org/wildfire/noncombustible-zone0-minimizing-pathways-to-home-ignition/

Fire can also move from house to house. IBHS looks at spacing, wind, materials, and connective fuels on the block, not just one lot.5https://ibhs.org/wildfire/building-to-building-fire-spread-data/

This is not the Wildfire Defense System. The barrels are a separate layer.
