Who we are

A wildfire defense company in Los Angeles

Matador Fire works with homeowners in Southern California canyon and foothill communities. We run a managed service. We install the system and keep it serviced. There is nothing for you to remember and nothing expiring in the garage.

Wind can carry wildfire embers ahead of the flames. Applied retardant works alongside defensible space and a hardened structure. The Wildfire Defense System is the retardant layer for the vegetation around your home.

The Wildfire Defense System

Retardant at your home before you need it

50 gallons of long-term fire retardant, a pump, and 100 feet of hose, installed at your home.

Managed, not purchased

Installed, inspected, and refilled on a regular cycle as part of the subscription.

Keeps working after it dries

Long-term retardant stays on treated plants until about 2 inches of rain, according to the manufacturer.

Lab testing

Rated Category IV under EPA's acute toxicity criteria, the lowest of four categories, in testing by StillMeadow. Intertek also tested its fire performance.

Refills

Refills are free when the retardant reaches its expiration date, or when you use it on this property before a mandatory evacuation order is issued for your area.

Important limits. No product or service can guarantee that a home will not be damaged or destroyed in a wildfire. The Wildfire Defense System is one layer of wildfire preparation. It does not replace defensible space, home hardening, insurance, or following official evacuation orders. Never delay leaving to use the system. Matador Fire does not send a crew during a fire as part of this subscription.

Why it matters when you sell

Buyers read about wildfire risk before they make an offer

4.3%lower sale price for homes with California's wildfire hazard disclosure3
1.4% to 2.5%higher sale price for homes built to wildfire codes, in one early study4

Neither study looked at retardant systems. We do not claim a Wildfire Defense System changes what your home sells for.

If your home is in a high or very high fire hazard severity zone, California law generally requires you to give the buyer documentation that the property meets defensible space rules, or to sign an agreement that the buyer will get it, depending on local rules.1 If the home was built before 2010, you also give a fire hardening disclosure that lists certain features and any state-listed low-cost retrofits you completed.2 A Wildfire Defense System and our service record are not defensible space documentation and are not on the state's retrofit list.

Buyers use that information. Homes that carried California's wildfire hazard disclosure sold for about 4.3% less than similar homes nearby, and up to about 6% less in Southern California.3 One early study found homes built to California's wildfire building codes sold for 1.4% to 2.5% more than similar homes.4

A Wildfire Defense System does not change your hazard zone. No one can promise a higher price. What you can hand a buyer is a maintained system and a written service record for your disclosure file.

How it works

From first call to your 3-year subscription

Free site assessment

A Matador Fire specialist walks your property and sizes the system. Most homes use one to three barrels, depending on the property. This is not a government defensible space inspection.

Install and service record

We set the system on the ground. If the ground isn't level, we may spread loose gravel under the unit. We don't dig, grade, or pour concrete, nothing is attached to your house, and we remove the gravel with the equipment if you ask. Nothing is plumbed into your house. We show you how to spray the vegetation around your home before you leave. You get a written service record for your disclosure file.

Your term, and an optional transfer

Your 3 years run from the day you pay, whether or not you sell. If you sell during the term, Matador Fire offers the time that is left to your buyer at no cost to them. If your buyer doesn't accept it, we remove the system at no charge, and the unused time is not refunded.

Pricing

One prepay covers 3 years

$4,752 per barrel for a 3-year subscription, paid upfront (about $132 per barrel per month), plus one $399 install per home.

If the new owner of your home does not accept the remaining term within 60 days, Matador Fire will remove the equipment at no charge. The remaining prepaid term is not refundable to you or the new owner.

This offer is a 3-year prepay only. The $399 install is charged once per home, not per barrel. Your 3 years start on the day you pay. You pay Matador Fire directly by ACH or check. It is a separate payment, not part of your home sale or closing papers. Matador Fire owns the equipment and keeps it serviced for the full 3 years.

Examples: 3-year prepay

  • 1 barrel x $4,752$4,752
  • Plus one $399 install per home+$399
  • 1 barrel, total before tax$5,151
  • 2 barrels x $4,752$9,504
  • Plus one $399 install per home+$399
  • 2 barrels, total before tax$9,903

Most homes use one to three barrels, depending on the property. Your site assessment sets the count.
